A terrace you use all year
Bioclimatic pergolas
Bioclimatic pergolas are aluminium structures with rotating roof louvres that let you decide how much sun, shade and air reaches your terrace. Close the louvres and you have a watertight roof. Open them and hot air escapes upwards, so it stays pleasant under the pergola even in the middle of July.
At Solimat we advise on, measure and install bioclimatic pergolas across Slovenia and abroad, from Ljubljana and Dolenjska to Štajerska and Primorska. We work with three proven European brands: Skymatik, Brustor and Sun Winner. So we do not sell you whatever happens to be in stock, but a system that suits your terrace, your climate and your budget.
How a bioclimatic pergola works
The heart of the system is the louvres in the roof. An electric motor turns them to the position you want at the press of a button, through an app or automatically: up to 140° on the Skymatik system and from 0° to 135° on the Sun Winner S500.
- ✓Louvres closed (0°): the roof is watertight. Water runs into concealed gutters in the frame and down through the posts, so it does not drip onto the terrace.
- ✓Louvres partly open: the shade stays while warm air escapes through the gaps. This is the bioclimatic effect, natural ventilation without air conditioning.
- ✓Louvres fully open: the most light and warmth, which you will appreciate in spring, autumn and on sunny winter days.
With weather sensors for rain, wind and sun, the pergola reacts on its own: it closes the louvres at the first drops and moves them to a safe position in strong wind. Even when you are not home. We explain how it works in more detail in our guide what a bioclimatic pergola is and how it works.
Why a bioclimatic pergola instead of a fixed roof
A fixed roof over the terrace always has the same effect: in summer heat builds up underneath, and in winter it takes light away from the rooms inside as well. A bioclimatic pergola adapts to the weather. In summer the open louvres let warm air out while keeping the shade, in rain it closes into a watertight roof, and in autumn and winter the open louvres let the sun onto the terrace and into the house.
That is why a bioclimatic pergola is not seasonal shading but a year-round outdoor living space. An extension of the living room that you use from March to November. If you are choosing between different solutions, we compared them in the article pergola, pergotenda or awning.
Skymatik, Brustor or Sun Winner: which one is right for you?
Each of the three brands we install is strongest in a different area. During the survey we recommend the one that suits your terrace.
Skymatik
For full automation
Skymatik bioclimatic pergolas have their own drive with Teleco electronics and built-in sensors for sun, rain and wind. The louvres rotate up to 140°, the reinforced FORTE louvre withstands up to 300 kg/m² of snow, and the system is tested for wind up to 230 km/h. The range includes the LINEAR 2.0, SKY 2 and SUPERB models.
Skymatik systems →Brustor
For locations with heavy snow
Belgian Brustor bioclimatic pergolas are known for a robust structure that handles high snow loads. The B600 S Cabrio has louvres that not only rotate but also fold away, opening the roof completely.
Brustor systems →Sun Winner
For large terraces without intermediate posts
The Sun Winner WIN CLIMATIC S500 bioclimatic pergola covers a terrace up to 7 × 7 m without a single intermediate post. The louvres rotate from 0° to 135°, and we can fit them with XPS insulation that prevents overheating and dampens the sound of rain. For smaller terraces the S200 model is available.
Sun Winner pergolas →We prepared a detailed comparison of all three in our guide how to choose a bioclimatic pergola.
Built for Slovenian winters and summer storms
With a pergola, the difference between a quality system and a cheap copy shows in the first heavy snowfall or hailstorm. That is why we look at three numbers:
300 kg/m²
Snow load
The Skymatik FORTE louvre withstands up to 300 kg/m². Because load capacity drops with span, we always recommend the reinforced profile for louvres longer than 4 m.
230 km/h
Wind resistance
The Skymatik system is tested for wind up to 230 km/h.
Concealed drainage
Drainage
Water collects in the frame and drains through the posts, so it does not spill over the edge even in a downpour.
The structure is made of extruded aluminium and stainless steel (inox), powder coated. It does not rust, does not warp and does not need yearly treatment like wood. Maintenance is simple: rinse the louvres with water from time to time.
For the coldest months you can add heating panels and ZIP blinds on the sides, so you can use the terrace in November too.
Additional equipment
The basic pergola is only the beginning. The most frequently chosen extras:
- ✓ZIP screen blinds on the sides: protection from wind, low side sun, insects and the neighbours' view
- ✓LED lighting in the louvres or frame, with dimming
- ✓Sensors for rain, wind, sun and snow for automatic operation
- ✓Infrared heaters for autumn evenings
- ✓Sliding glass walls that turn the pergola into a winter garden
- ✓Insulated louvres against overheating and rain noise
- ✓RAL colours and wood effect, so the pergola matches the facade and window frames
- ✓Smart control by remote, wall switch or app
Do I need a building permit?
As a rule in Slovenia, a pergola or canopy up to 20 m² counts as a simple structure and does not need a building permit. Between 20 and 50 m² it is a minor structure, for which you need a permit under the simplified procedure, where a sketch with dimensions and placement is sufficient. In both cases the installation must comply with the municipal spatial plan (distance from the boundary, height).
During the survey we tell you which category your pergola falls into and help with the sketch if you need one.

Frequently asked questions about bioclimatic pergolas
What is a bioclimatic pergola?
A bioclimatic pergola is an aluminium structure with roof louvres that you rotate to control shade, light and ventilation. When the louvres are closed, the roof is watertight.
Can a bioclimatic pergola handle snow?
Yes. Quality systems are calculated for snow load, the Skymatik FORTE louvre for example up to 300 kg/m². For larger spans we recommend a reinforced louvre profile.
Is a bioclimatic pergola really watertight?
With the louvres closed, yes. Water runs into concealed gutters in the frame and drains through the posts.
How much does a bioclimatic pergola cost?
The price depends on size, brand, equipment and installation. You can get an estimated price for your terrace in our calculator, and we explain what affects the price in our pricing guide.
Do I need a building permit for a pergola?
A pergola up to 20 m² generally does not need a building permit. Between 20 and 50 m² you need a permit for a minor structure under the simplified procedure. Always check the municipal spatial plan as well.
How long does installation take?
Installation usually takes one to three days, depending on the size of the pergola and how it is fixed.
Can the pergola be attached to the facade of the house?
Yes. The pergola can be freestanding on four posts or attached to the house with two posts. During the survey we check whether the facade can take the attachment.
What maintenance does it need?
Minimal. The aluminium is powder coated and does not rust, so occasionally rinsing the louvres with water and a visual check of the drive are enough.
How large can a bioclimatic pergola be?
The Sun Winner S500 covers up to 7 × 7 m without an intermediate post, while a single Skymatik module covers up to 9.1 × 4.4 m. Larger areas are covered with several connected modules.
